about

Written by Robert Forster and Grant McLennan

The idea to record 'Was There Anything I Could Do?’ from the classic Go-Betweens album ’16 Lovers Lane’ came many years ago. It seemed to turn up regularly on the car radio. I found myself singing counter lines to Amanda’s violin solo (which I love) while out on the road. This eventually turned into a fully blown Celtic styled tune. Our instruments seemed to suit the song - Stephen’s bodhrán intro replacing the muted, chunky electric guitar and Ed's and my constant, driving octave mandolin/mandolin picking.

It’s always an interesting decision to record a song from a legendary record - it is out of the greatest respect that it all came about. The band I was playing with, Roaring Jack (Celtic punk), were recording at EMI Studios 301 in Sydney at the same time The Go-Betweens were recording ’16 Lovers Lane’ - 1987/88. There must have been something in the air.

There are two mixes of the song - the straight forward ‘band’ mix and a stripped down ‘acoustic’ mix, the creation of our friend/engineer/producer Greg working tirelessly into the night in the shed and reflecting The Go-Betweens album and demo versions of the song.

Cheers, Steph
